Did You Take Your Vitamins Today?
Today as I was preparing to write, my husband did something he has been known to do on those occasions when “baby fever” has struck him — he brought the bottle of prenatal vitamins to where I was and sat them down in front of me. It’s his little way of reminding me to take care of myself and to try to make sure that I’m as healthy as I can be in the miraculous event that conception should take place. Even though it may seem virtually impossible for us to conceive at this point, it’s still important that I do everything in my power to provide all the nutrients I can to help those cells divide properly. That means I take a prenatal almost every day, and because I tend to stay a little anemic, I take an extra iron supplement. Even if we don’t conceive, I still need to be healthy. So, I urge all of you to do the same — take that prenatal everyday. It’s important even before you conceive. And, since we can’t know the exact second that conception takes place (or implantation in the event of IVF procedures), we can’t wait until then to start taking proper care of our bodies. Neural tube defects happen very, very early in a pregnancy so it’s vitally important that levels of folic acid are high enough to try to ward off these defects. If you aren’t already, replace your multi-vitamin with a prenatal. And, if you aren’t taking any vitamins at all, perhaps you should start. Maintaining your own health is one of the few things we do actually have control over when stricken with infertility issues.

Excellent advice for sure. The way people (most people, that is) eat these days there’s just no way that we can get all of the vitamins and minerals we need on a daily basis.
