When You Just Don’t Fit In

Published by susans at 10:25 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Once a couple is diagnosed as infertile, it’s sometimes hard to figure out where you fit into society.   You never really noticed before just how many commercials feature cute babies and adorable infants.  It seems that every person you pass on the street is holding the hand of a child.

A major issue that couples have a hard time with is going out.  If you go out with couples, the talk will inevitably turn to children.  If you go out with singles, you find that you have little in common with them as they are still footloose and fancy free.  Hanging out with family is virtually the same as hanging out with couples because they, too, will end up asking about children.  And what do you tell them??  Do you even want to tell them anything??

Obviously you can’t stay holed up in the house all the time so you will need to come to grips with the infertility issue.  But, that doesn’t mean you have to throw yourself into miserable situations. If you’re having a particularly bad day, find a reason to stay home.  If you find yourself staying home constantly, though, you’re going to need to get some sort of help — either from your doctor, a therapist, or by finding some therapeutic ways to cope.  One of the best ways I have found to deal with the stresses of infertility is to find others going through the same thing.  I have spent many an hour on various message boards. Not only am I doing a little research, I’m making friends in the process.  These friends understand what I’m going through, and they can usually offer some friendly advice, and always a sympathetic ear.  After talking to my online friends, I almost always feel better — I at least feel supported.  I encourage you to find a message board where you feel at home, as well.  Tomorrow I will list a few of my favorite support forums and tell you why I love them so much.  Until then, see if you can find a few yourself — after all, everybody needs to fit in somewhere.
