Defining Infertility
For a woman who has been trying to conceive a child, the word “infertile” can seem like a death sentence. The medical establishments define infertility as the inability to conceive a child after one year of unprotected sex. Some women have little trouble in conceiving a child, yet find that carrying a baby to term near impossible - these women are deemed infertile as well. Although when a woman is struggling to get pregnant it may seem that virtually every ill-prepared teenager who even considers sex ends up pregnant, statistics reveal that there is only about a 25% chance of a woman conceiving on any given cycle.
When couples seek help for infertility, many have tried to conceive for far longer than one year. After numerous fertility tests, it appears that approximately 1/3 of the cases can be attributed to the woman, 1/3 attributed to the man, and the final 1/3 is undetermined. Although many of these cases will later be deemed “successful” with fertility treatments, not all couples will find themselves biological parents.
If you think you may be sufferring from infertility, it is very important that you seek help sooner rather than later. Seeking help from a qualified Reproductive Endocrinologist may be necessary. Medical technology is improving steadily, and there are various treatments which can be utilized to help increase fertility.
